Living alone can make it difficult to cook for one and not over do it – that’s why we are bringing you practical tips for cooking when it’s just you.

CREATE A MEAL PLAN.

First and foremost and definitely the most important part of cooking for one is creating a meal plan. It saves money, sanity and you don’t waste as much! It can be super simple too: just write down what you can make with what you have and match it up to your schedule. It can be old recipes or new recipes, simple or complicated, but all in all, it’s a necessity.

MAKE LESS, WASTE LESS.

It’s tough to learn how to portion things. And sometimes you end up with leftovers for weeks. So learn to cut recipes in half by using some online tools or even investing in a kitchen scale! From there, you can learn which foods work well in the freezer and which ones don’t. That way you aren’t wasting away freezer space and food!

KEEP MEALS SIMPLE.

Going hand in hand with meal planning and making less, keep your meals simple. Three full, complicated meals a day can be tiring and can waste a lot of time. Try and keep breakfast and lunch simple and then go big for dinner.

ALWAYS KEEP A CONTAINER OF SOUP AND FRESH BREAD IN THE FREEZER.

Something quick and easy and there for you when you’re on the go is soup and bread. Just keep some in your freezer to warm up when you can home. This is a simple trick, but also keeps you away from going out or ordering in.

LIMIT SNACK OPTIONS

It’s so, so, so easy to just snack on whatever’s available in your cabinets instead of cooking. Which means you might have trail mix and ice cream for dinner three nights a week before actually cooking yourself something. Start to buy yourself less unhealthy snacks and more healthy options like fruit and veggies — something you can use in your meal or munch on as you wait!

HAVE FRIENDS OVER!

It’s always fun to share a good meal with great friends. So why not have some friends over for dinner to enjoy the meal you made. Plus company isn’t bad and there’s someone who’s bound to take the leftovers.
