We love our pets, right? Those cute little faces that look up at us with adoration and cheer, those little paws that scramble excitedly across the floor every time we get home, and that general presence every night that curls up near us as we lay down to go to bed- Pets are the best. But unfortunately, not every pet gets that loving experience that your cat or dog at home may have- some get abandoned or thrown away, homeless and looking for love and a hot meal every night.
That’s where our local neighborhood heroes come in. Animals shelters are a staple of the community. They take in animals that may be deemed “lost causes” and they spend money and resources turning their lives around and finding them a hot meal and a loving home.
It’s so important to support your local shelter, and here in Dallas we have quite a few No-Kill Shelters that deserve all of the support in the world! So if you’ve got a couple extra bucks to donate this month, a few free days to volunteer, or are maybe even looking for a new addition to your family- Listen up!
DFW Humane Society– Founded in 1967, DFW Humane Society is a no-kill shelter dedicated to giving homeless and unwanted pets a second chance in life through adoption. This shelter can house up to 100 animals at a time and since they do not receive any state or federal funding- they depend solely on people like you to help them help strays. They have several opportunities for volunteering and look for a kind heart to do anything from socialize and bathe with the pups and kittens to visiting schools to teach pet care basics. Stop by and support DFW and check out all their lovely furbabies!
Operation Kindness– With a name like Operation Kindness, you have to know that this place is going to be one of the ultimate pet sanctuaries. Since they opened in the 60’s, Operation Kindness has saved the lives of nearly 100,000 homeless animals. Operation Kindness is known to take in rescues from 47 different shelters who have run out of space. They’re relied on by the community. Did you know JUST LAST YEAR they had 4,889 adoptions, and served over 308,000 meals to homeless animals? And now they need you! If you’ve got some extra money this month you can donate on their website- every dollar counts.
Dog & Kitty City– Working for over 40 years, Dog & Kitty City has been here providing a safe and healthy environment for abused and neglected animals in Dallas. They are a no-kill shelter, meaning that any animal that comes into their care has a home for life- adoption or no adoption! They take on the responsibility of spay or neutering all of their animals, testing for Feline Leukemia, FIV, and heartworms, and give all necessary vaccinations, medications and heartworm preventatives. If you’ve got the time to volunteer, would like to donate or even foster one of their wonderful furbabies, stop by today or check them out online!
You can support these groups by donating, volunteering, or even simply following them on social media and sharing their posts. But most importantly, you can really support these places by remembering how important it is to ADOPT!
